A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Emeka Obegolu, has called on lawyers to take steps to prioritise their health and wellbeing through regular exercise as well as routine medical checkups.

In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer, the Learned Silk deplored the lost of very bright legal practitioners lately due to health related issues, saying legal practice most times does not afford lawyers the opportunity to live healthy lifestyles.

He said: “Sadly, the Legal Profession in Nigeria has lost some promising, bright and active members, young and old recently. Medical practitioners attribute such deaths most times to undiagnosed ill-health. It has become imperative for us all to lend our voices to call on Nigerian legal practitioners to prioritize regular exercises, as well as give serious attention to medical checkups to ascertain their state of health.”

He added, “Undoubtedly, Legal practice is rewarding and there is pride in being identified as a lawyer, however it also takes up a lot of our time, making it easy to forget important things like eating a balanced diet, getting proper rest, and getting enough exercise. A lawyer’s schedule makes it challenging to put as much time into self-care as required, but the body does not understand excuses.”

Obegolu while emphasising the importance of exercise for lawyers, recalled the words of John Adams, a lawyer, and Former President of the United States who is quoted to have said “exercise invigorates, and enlivens all the faculties of body and mind”.

According to Obegolu, modern medical research has proven those golden words right; noting that “physical activity not only makes us physically healthier, but it can also help reduce depression (a challenge for many lawyers) and enhance mental acuity. I must not fail to mention regular and routine medical checkups as a necessary requirement for prevention, early diagnosis and proper treatment where necessary.”

He concluded by encouraging lawyers to take advantage of the NBA-NHIS insurance scheme and the medicial checkup to be provided at the NBA-AGC. “As part of the welfare packages of the present administration of the Nigerian Bar Association at national level, Health Insurance Scheme for members was introduced to reduce costs and make healthcare affordable, but unfortunately, available records show only a few have registered with it.”

“It is my belief that the Technical Committee on Conference Planning will include free medical checkups for conferees and I urge all conferees to avail themselves of that opportunity. Health is Wealth!” He concluded.
