The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Osun State University, Yusuf Ali, on Thursday said crises in the nation’s universities would end when each institution had the opportunity to negotiate wages with its workers.

Ali spoke in Osogbo, while briefing newsmen on the sixth biennial conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-owned Universities in Nigeria, billed to hold between 21stand 25th March 2022 at the Osun State University, Osogbo.

The legal practitioner, who is also chairman of the committee, decried the exclusion of state universities in the negotiation with the striking members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, adding that strike should not also be forced on workers, unwilling to join any industrial action.

He said, “All the negotiations done so far with ASUU have been between the Federal government and the union. Our organisation has never been involved in it and that is part of the problem that we are saying.

“How could you negotiate things with people and then you want to force your agreement on people who are not parties? This is part of what I called a very unique way that we do things in our country.

“In other countries, the government doesn’t even negotiate things when it comes to university. Each university will sit down and negotiate with the workers. I hope we get there soon. Once we get to that place, there will be no more crisis.”

According to him, Osun state governor and the Visitor to UNIOSUN, Adegboyega Oyetola, would declare the conference open, while the opening session would be chaired by Ekiti state governor, Kayode Fayemi

Also during the conference, Registrar/Chief Executive, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, would present a keynote address on the theme of the year’s conference theme, ‘State Ownership Dynamics, University Councils and The Need For a New Social Contract Between Society and University.’
