I sincerely congratulate the Executive Committee and Members of the NBA, Onitsha Branch on her Annual Law Week holding from the 10th day of December, 2021 to 12th day of December, 2021 in Onitsha, Anambra State. The Branch is famed for being swift in tackling critical national issues and for being the torch bearer on socio-legal discourses. The theme of the Law Week – “ACCESS TO JUSTICE IN THE FACE OF INSECURITY; THE CITIZENS’ DILEMMA” is another simple and apt, yet thought-provoking topic deserving of deliberation especially at this period in time when the nation has been enmeshed in serious security crises across the nation. Ultimately, there is no better time than now to discuss the fundamental processes through which the citizens’ right to access justice can be protected vis-a-vis the veritable means of dealing with the security crises towards repositioning the Country for healing and greatness.

Over the past decade, we have been faced with security challenges that pose dangerous threat to our national lives and corporate existence. The gory situation has even assumed a more dangerous dimension which has seen the Eastern Region of Nigeria engulfed in one of its worst humanitarian crises in many years. Notwithstanding these disturbances, Nigerians have demonstrated staunch resilience in the face of the mounting challenges. It is also important to underscore the fact that access to justice is undeniably an important barometer for assessing not only the rule of law in any society but also the quality of governance as well as the well being of the citizens in that society. Similarly, the Constitutional mandate that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of governance also provides the litmus test for this assessment!

While I commend the security agencies for the work they do despite inadequate resources, I call on the Government to do more to restore peace and to bolster our hopes for a greater nation. Correspondingly, we as citizens must also join hands with Government and the Security Agencies to ensure lasting peace and bring about the much desired development. The Branch, therefore in setting this theme, has offered one of the many of such fora for us as citizens, to brainstorm on the way forward to avoid a situation where the society will become so unsafe for access to justice both for us as lawyers and other partners in the administration of justice.

In all, we shall continue to give glory to God Almighty as we contribute our quota in the fight against the security challenges country wide.

I wish the Branch successful deliberations.

Long live NBA, Onitsha Branch!

Long live the NBA!!

God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!
