A Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned till December 8 the trial of a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Mr Ibrahim Abdulsalami and six others over alleged N6,850,447,609.90 fraud.

Justice Babs Kuewunmi fixed the date following the absence of a lawyer for one of the defendants, Mr Victor Opara.

Opara, one of the lawyers shortlisted for elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by the Legal Practitioner Privilege Committees (LPPC), was said to be in Abuja, for the SANship programme.

Abdulsalami’s co-defendants include Adegorite Olumuyiwa, Agbolade Segun, Adegorite’s wife, Joy Ayodele Adegorite, who is the Managing Director of Multeng Travels and Tours Ltd.

The others are Clara Aliche, Bola Akinribido, Sesebor Abiodun and two firms – Randville Investment Ltd and Multeng Travels and Tours Ltd.

They are standing trial on a 24-count amended charge of conspiracy, fraud, forgery and unlawful conversion of funds preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

So far, the EFCC has called three witnesses, including a bank compliance officer, Teslim Ajuwon and one Temitope Olanrewaju.

The EFCC, in a charge marked FHC/L/145C/2016, alleged among others that the defendants and one Nnamdi Udoh, between January 31, 2013, and September 3, 2015, with intent to defraud and by false pretence conspired to induce the Agency to deliver N2,847,523,975.00, to Delosa Ltd, Air Sea Delivery Ltd and Sea Schedules Systems Ltd under the pretext that the said sum represented the cost of clearing consignments belonging to the Agency.

The defendants were also alleged to have converted various sums of money amounting to N4,003,532,608.90 belonging to the Agency, to their personal use.

The offences, according to the anti-graft agency, contravened Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2016 and were punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

The defendants pleaded not guilty.
