— Says General Buhari is A Product of Protest And Civil Disobedience
— Condemns Arrest Of Peaceful Protesters At Lekki Toll Gate
— Warns Against Any Harm To Protesters By Security Forces

Foremost Human Rights Attorney, and Representative of the Civil Society Organization at the Lagos State EndSARS Judicial Panel, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa SAN, has commend the fragrant disregard for human rights of peaceful protesters by members of the Police Force.

The learned silk noted that Nigerians have always sought to fight for better systems and for an improved democratic state since the era of military juntas, including paying with their life, yet there seem not to be an end in sight, especially with the continuous dehumanization of civilians by the police, even when the events of October 20, 2021 is still very visible and sensitive an issue in the Nigerian space.

“For decades before the advent of this administration, Nigerians have risked their lives, liberties, their times and their energies, their resources, to win back this country on the side of democracy and good government, from military dictatorship. Some have paid the supreme price with their lives.

I have been monitoring events at the Lekki Toll Gate since morning, and I am totally overwhelmed with the images, videos, and sundry evidence of police brutality of armless civilians, who ventured to protest at the Toll Gate. In one particular video, I saw citizens of Nigeria being dehumanized, stripped half-naked and cramped together in a rickety bus. This is totally unacceptable. While we are yet to come to terms with the events of October 20, 2020, it becomes worrisome that the security agencies have not learnt any positive lesson from those occurrences. I commend the protesters for their peaceful conduct.”

Mr. Adegboruwa SAN, however, called for calm and warned that no harm should come to any of the arrested protesters in the custody of the security agencies. He considered that the General Buhari led administration is also a product of protest and civil disobedience, and as such ought to respect the rights of protesters.

In a related development, the Learned Silk, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, has expressed his intention to decline membership and further participation with the Lagos State EndSARS Judicial Panel, and accordingly is inactive consolation with members of the Civil Society [which he represents at the panel] to that effect. He considers the paradox in sitting on a panel that denotes healing and reconciliation when at the same time, fresh injuries are being perpetrated with impunity.

‘I cannot in good conscience continue to sit at any Panel of Inquiry to heal wounds and end police brutality, when fresh assaults are being perpetrated with impunity. Consequently, I am presently consulting with my constituency within the civil society, as to my continued participation in the EndSARS Judicial Panel.’

Recall that TheNigeriaLawyers had reported about a planned protest in Lagos, today the 13th of February, 2021, in retaliation of the Lagos State EndSARS Judicial panel to reopen the Lekki Toll Plaza despite ongoing Investigations.
