The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch, has held a training on life saving skills for its mentors on November 27

In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer, the Branch Chairman, Bulus Y. Atsen, said the training is against the backdrop of incessant lost of lives across the country which calls for reflection.

Citing researchers of Warwick University and Manchester University, he said thousands of people die every year because they lack Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills

“As the country mourns the unnecessary loss of human life in different parts of the country, there is a need to reflect on the recent spike in avoidable and untimely deaths among members of our dear profession.

“According to leading researchers, at Warwick University, thousands of people die every year because others lack the ‘confidence and skill’ to perform CPR.

“The British Red Cross and University of Manchester also report that over 59% of deaths could be prevented if more people stepped in with some simple first aid.

“In Nigeria, these numbers are undoubtedly higher, especially when the deaths are often preceded by a period of unconsciousness or slump.

“Against this backdrop, we organized the 2nd NBA Abuja Branch CPR and First Aid Training for Lawyers in conjunction with Hygeia HMO.” the statement partly reads

Atsen said the training was held both physically and virtually and test was conducted on participants for free

Furthermore, he said there was demonstration on CPR and how to treat victims of knife and gun related injuries.

He said, “The program which held on the 27th November, 2020 was attended physically and virtually and also featured free medical testing for participants.

“Mr. Usman Shamaki, a certified Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation trainer demonstrated how to resuscitate an unconscious person.

“He further educated participants on how to treat victims of knife and gun-related injuries.”

The NBA Chairman also disclosed that there were testimonies after the training and presentation was made on how lawyers can maintain physical fitness.

He called on other Branches of the Association to promote the training of these skills in their branches.

The statement further reads in part, “Participants shared testimonies of the positive impact of the CPR training organized by the Branch under the Chairmanship Mr. Folarin Aluko.

“Mr. Ikechukwu, a representative of Hygeia HMO made a presentation on how to maintain physical fitness. He advised lawyers to cultivate the culture of weekly exercise, cut down intake of carbonated drinks and alcohol among other measures.

“Hygeia HMO is the official partner of the Multi Jurisdiction Lawyers Health Insurance Scheme pioneered by the NBA Abuja Branch.

“I hereby enjoin members from all over the country to promote the learning of these skills among Branch members and their friends and family. Certificates were issued to participants.”
