Governance is an evergreen subject. It is relevant in how states rule, regulate, and relate to their citizens to ensure peace, development, and prosperity.

The African Union (AU) presently serves as the regional governance Institution through which its members could confront their multifaceted challenges. Deploying the analytical top of public international law and related disciplines, this book examines the role of the AU through sole inter-dependent governance themes: political and economic development, peace and security, and justice and accountability.

While highlighting the process and implication of the transposition of Organization of African Union (OAU) into the AU, the book interrogates the AU Act and Vision, and the ambitious Agenda 2063, all set against the background and ideals of pan-Africanism. It then examines the depredations of globalisation and Africa’s response through the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) as well as Africa’s efforts at addressing some governance challenges through the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

It reviews the AU peace and security architecture through the Peace and Security Council (PSC). Finally, it reveals Africa’s role in developing norms and institutions of accountability, and how the unresolved tension between the AU and the International Criminal Court (ICC) implicates on this effort. The book deploys non-technical language.

It addresses a wide audience, including international law and relations practitioners, Foreign Service personnel, staff of international organisations, government legal and policy advisers, lawyers, academics, students and researchers on regional governance in Africa
