The National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, says it has resolved no fewer than 790 data protection breaches since the commencement of the implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection regulation in 2019.

The NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, made the disclosure during a professional development workshop organized by the agency with a view to developing strong data privacy in the country.

Represented by the Director, eGovernment Development and Regulations, eGDR, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, said the feat was achieved in collaboration with the Data Protection Compliance Organizations, DPCOs.

The director-general, therefore, commended the DPCOs for their resilience and innovation in entrenching data protection in the country.

According to him, NITDA in partnership with DPCOs has issued 230 enforcement and compliance notices aside from routine training of DPCOs

This, he said, led to more patronage of the DPCOs.

“We participated in about 93 events hosted by DPCOs and other stakeholders all in a bid to deepen understanding and to improve compliance.

“Hosting of the first Data Privacy Week, where we promoted data privacy protection through all media.

“We have also resolved 790 issues relating to data protection and investigation of data breach cases of which one was concluded in a world-record of four months and the fine has been paid to the Federal Government, a statement from the agency quoted Mr Olatunji as saying during the workshop.

Also speaking, some of the participants commended NITDA under the leadership of Mr Inuwa over his achievements so far.

They, therefore, assured the agency of their resolve to play a great part in promoting ICT policies and strategies that would yield positive impact on individuals and the nation at large.
