The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has upheld the decision of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) club owners towards ending the hitherto suspended 2019/2020 league season by accepting the Point Per Game (PPG) option.

With this ratification, Plateau United are the official league winner while Rivers United are second with Enyimba placing third. Lobi Stars that have been crying foul are fourth on the table.

While Plateau United and Rivers United will fly the country’s flag in next season’s CAF Champions League, Enyimba and Kano Pillars will represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The club chairmen had on Sunday adopted the Point Per Game model, where the total points accumulated by any club were divided by the number of games played so far, which a couple of clubs, particularly Lobi Stars, kicked against.

However, the NFF called an enlarged meeting and in attendance were the League Management Company (LMC), as well as the club owners. Resolutions at the meeting, as obtained, indicated that the NFF adopted the PPG but said that in the event that two clubs tie, goals difference will be used to separate them.

Consequently, from the new table obtained, Plateau United finished first on the log with 1.96 points and they are followed by Rivers United with 1.8o points, and same as third placed Enyimba but the former had a superior goals difference of 1.87.

In the fourth place are Lobi Stars with 1.72 PPG, while Rangers International of Enugu finished fifth with 1.54 PPG.

Meanwhile, Rivers United have praised the NFF and the League Management Company for adopting the PPG model that gave them CAF Champions League slot.

Franklin Owhor, the club chairman in a statement said that club wish to express their deepest appreciation to NFF, LMC for revising the decision of Club owners on the conclusion of the league.

“We encourage your determination towards ensuring justice, fairness and equity by listening to our outcry. Today (yesterday), you have resolved to prove your desires to take the game to enviable height, and we also extend our thanks to our resilient and hardworking Commissioner of Sports Rivers State for taking our protest and cry forward to get us CAF champions league slot. However, we still and ever remain indebted as true partners in the game.”

Lobi United are believed to have described the ratification as open robbery.
