The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has said governors in Nigeria recognise the need to support businesses during the lockdown.

He spoke, according to an NGF’s communiqué, after the fifth COVID-19 teleconference of the governors. The communiqué was made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

He said, “Governors recognised the importance of ensuring the continuous existence of businesses during the lockdown and will take necessary measures to support same.”

Fayemi, who is also the governor of Ekiti State, said the governors called for greater collaboration with their states, the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, for contact tracing and testing of people with coronavirus infection.

He further stated that the governors were working to improve their logistical and operational efficiency in sample collection and care.

According to him, most states have established COVID-19 hotlines and will ensure that emergency services are integrated into the operations of their task forces on COVID-19.

He also said infection prevention and control committees would be set up in states to support the role of health workers on the frontline of the pandemic.

The NGF chairman stated that the forum commended the Coalition against COVID-19 for their commitment and collaboration on the Coronavirus response.

He stated that the commendation followed a briefing to the forum from the CACOVID comprising the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele; the Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote; and the Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Nwigwe, on the delivery of health care equipment and distribution of palliatives to the most vulnerable persons across the states.

Fayemi said, “The Forum received briefing from the National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Dr Sani Aliyu, and the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, on the activities of the PTF, including the current partnership with the Coalition against COVID-19 to support states’ response to the pandemic through the delivery of essential health equipment and the distribution of palliatives to vulnerable persons.

“Members commended the Presidential Task Force and the NCDC for ramping up the country’s testing and contact-tracing capacity during the two-week period of lockdown in many parts of the country and called for greater collaboration with states who are the primary stakeholders of the COVID-19 response.”

He added, “Governors are working to improve their logistical and operational efficiency for sample collection and care. Most states have established COVID-19 hotlines and will ensure that emergency services are integrated into the operations of their task force on COVID-19.

“Infection prevention and control committees will also be set up in states to support the role of health workers who are on the frontline of the pandemic.”
