The Chairman, Young Lawyers Forum Asaba branch D.C. Bakwunye Esq., has expressed displeasure over the way and manner men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC) display crude force, Gestapo brutality and unprofessional against harmless citizens of Delta State.

Bakwunye made this remark following the dehumanization treatment meted out to a helpless mechanic by NSCDC operatives while trying to clear an accident car.

Bakwunye in his statement explained the ordeal the Victim had to pass through because he wanted to clear the car based on the instructions of the  car owner.

He said”Men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps hereinafter referred to as NSCDC had mounted a road block along the Ughelli/Asaba expressway, particularly at Umuseti Junction, Kwale. This road block had caused an accident on the 8th day of March, 2020.

“However, on the next day, a mechanic was assigned by the owner of the damaged vehicle at the road block ostensibly on the instructions of the owner of the damaged vehicle.

“When the innocent mechanic got to the spot where the damaged vehicle was, he humbly asked the driver that conveyed him to the spot to stop so he could alight and face his business of the day but Alas! This became his own undoing as well as the entire passengers in the vehicle.

“Just like a pack of hungry hyenas upon a prey, men of the NSCDC descended heavily on the bus driver and his passengers (including old men and women) with tear gas. Why??? Instinctively, this generated an atmosphere of bedlam, pandemonium and entropy.

“Suffice it to say at this material point that the NSCDC is a creation of the law, a seed of the law and not an assemblage of scofflaws. Put further, kindly refer to Part II, Section 3(1)(a-v) of the NSCDC Act, 2003 clearly states the functions and powers of the Corps of which from he aforementioned fact was upheld more in breach than in observance. NSCDC is not an outfit for the torture, hurt or dehumanization of poor helpless Nigerians who coincidentally are also taxpayers who contribute in one way or the other to the betterment of our dear country Nigeria.

“Mr. Lucky Asanuvwie Esq. who gave an eye-witness account and also suffered serious burns as a result of the tear gas while in this same vehicle revealed that to make matters precariously worse, these men were without their name tags on their uniforms and were in an unmarked Toyota Camry salon car.

“This “I’m above the law” attitude displayed by some of our fellow country men who feel superhuman because they are in uniforms should and must cease, strictly condemned and disassociated from as a matter of social urgency.

“It behooves on the relevant authorities or better, independent assessment of what the nature of training and orientation these men get from their recruitment/training centres in Nigeria. A proper briefing of the rights of the citizens as enshrined in our Constitution should be emphasized upon during the recruitment/training of the officers and men of NSCDC.

“We call on stakeholders, most especially the Deputy Commandant NSCDC to without much ado to:

a ). Fish out his men responsible for this intimidation and harassment of innocent Nigerian citizens
b). publicity denounce the  unprofessional conduct of his men
c). A disciplinary measure be meted out on them to serve as deterrence to others.
d). Get them more engaged in what they were employed to do under the NSCDC Act.

“May it be known that we strongly deprecate, chide and excoriate this show of lawlessness and cruelty by the men of NSCDC, Delta State Command,” his statement read.
