The Chairman, Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria in Oyo State, Dr Olugbade Omotajo, has urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts at preventing the outbreak of coronavirus in Nigeria.

Omotajo gave the advice while chatting with journalists on the sidelines of an event titled, ‘Coronavirus epidemic: Nigeria in context’ at the Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Public Health, University College Hospital, Ibadan.

According to him, coronavirus resides primarily in animals, it can be transferred to man during uncontrolled and unregulated man-animal contact.

“The National Centre for Disease Control has set up a coronavirus preparedness group made up of port health officers, immigration officers and other stakeholders. The group coordinates screening of incoming people and goods at all the nation’s ports to constantly monitor the spread.

“To guarantee all-inclusiveness surveillance, private terminals at all country’s airports should be opened up for coverage by relevant public health officers.”

On the treatment, prevention and control of the disease, Omotajo said, “Till date, there is no officially recognised treatment for infection by COVID-19 nor has any vaccine been developed. Studies are ongoing and different recipes are being tried.

“However, where the disease is complicated by superimposed bacterial infection, the use of appropriate antibiotics could be life-saving. For this reason, prevention and control have remained the cornerstone of management.

“While trials continue in order to come up with an effective drug against the disease, it is important to state that the consumption of garlic does not confer any curative advantage and all cases of catarrh and sore throats must visit the physician.”

On the plight of Nigerian students currently trapped in Wuhan, China, Omotajo said the intervention by the Nigerian Consular in China to indigent students was inadequate.
