Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR)

Operations Controller, Department of Petroleum Resources, Gombe field office, Abdullahi Abawa, on Thursday, assured that the agency would continue to ensure a petroleum sector that would be sustainable, environmentally friendly, self managed, as well as operating according to international best practices.

He also disclosed that in order to achieve the desired oil and gas sector, law, procedures and guidelines must be complied with by all stakeholders.

Abawa spoke during the 2020 DPR/Stakeholders Conference in Gombe.

He stressed that electronic platforms had also been developed to enhance transparency and improve the processing of applications for approval, as well as licences.

The operations controller, added that sanctions had been put in place to check operators breaching the extant laws.

He told stakeholders that the DPR frowned on non-observation of statutory due diligence by operators.

Abawa warned against developing and operating without obtaining all relevant approvals/licences, poor housekeeping, environmental pollution, operating without a valid licence, under-dispensing of products, diversion of petroleum products, violation of the DPR seals, among unwholesome activities.

He stressed that those found engaged in such practices “shall be sanctioned appropriately.

“Beyond the enforcement of sanctions, it is our desire as regulator to see ‘self-regulated’ operators in the sector. This will boost the confidence of the government and customers who buy these products have in the operators (major marketers and independent marketers).

“You can become self-regulated by developing internal control mechanisms and standard operating procedures derived from the relevant DPR laws and procedure guides.”
