The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Abuja Branch (Unity Bar) Chairman, Mr. Folarin Aluko on Monday, 2nd December, 2019 issued its 2018-2019 Lawyers Health Insurance Report containing the utilization details of the Lawyers Health Insurance Scheme.

The Lawyers Health Insurance Scheme is a welfare intervention designed to medical relief to legal practitioners, members, their loved ones and staff. The Scheme is managed by the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch in partnership with Hygeia HMO. Under the Scheme, members have access to more than 1,000 healthcare service providers nationwide and over 100 providers in the FCT.

According to the NBA Abuja Branch Chairman, Folarin Aluko, “As we move into our 3rd year, more than 200 souls have benefitted from the Scheme.”

It is recorded that from 2018-2019, 88% of the total population of subscribers utilized the scheme, with an average rate of 16% of subscribers accessing medical care monthly.

The top 5 (five) medical procedures in terms of cost were
1. Surgery- minor, major and intermediate (including C.S)
2. Prescription drugs
3. Maternity-Antenatal and Normal Delivery
4. Consultations- General practitioner and laboratory investigation.

During the year, 8 babies were born under the scheme with our Subscribers bearing no additional cost. The babies and their mothers are hale and hearty. In general, the top 5 conditions enrollees who visited the hospitals in 2019 were
1. Malaria
2. Typhoid infection
3. Acute upper respiratory infection
4. Hypertention
5. Sepsis.

Concluding the report, Mr. Folarin observed that “according to the data available to us, the highest demographic of Subscribers registered on the scheme are in the 30-39 age range. We should encourage all Lawyers to take health issues as seriously as client issues.
