* Man in court for stealing N20,000 phone

Two lawyers, Matthew Laogun and Ayodele Laogun, on Tuesday, appeared before an Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo for alleged N1m land fraud.
The lawyers were arraigned before Justice Wasiu Akanbi on three counts of conspiracy, false pretences and stealing.
The charges read in part, “That you, Matthew Laogun, Ayodele Laogun and others now at large, sometime in October 2010 within the Osogbo Judicial Division of the Federal High Court, conspired among yourselves to commit felony to wit; obtaining money under false pretences and stealing, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 8 and punishable under Section 1 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other related Offences Act, Cap AA, Vol. 1, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2006.
“That you, Matthew Laogun, Ayodele Laogun and others now at large, did by false pretences with intent to defraud, obtain a total sum of N1m from one Dr Gbadebo Adeyemi, being a land agent to one Dr Charles, knowing same to be false, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 11(C) and punishable under Section 13 of the Advance Fee fraud and other related Offences Act, Cap A (8), Vol. 1, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2006.”
The prosecutor, S. Ayodele, a legal officer from the Zone ‘XI’ Police Command, Osogbo, announced appearance for the prosecution.
The defence counsel, Bamidele Ajibade, made an oral application for the bail of the defendants.
In his ruling, Justice Akanbi granted the bail application and adjourned the matter till February 20, 2020.
In another development, a 22-year-old man, Stephen Mbanong, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft of a mobile phone.
Mbanong is standing trial on a charge of stealing.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Caleb Leranmo, alleged that the defendant stole a Tecno LB6 mobile phone valued at N20,000 propeerty of one Raphael Anande.
Leranmo told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 26, 2019, around 4pm at Elemi in Iworoko-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
His counsel, Mr Gbenga Ariyibi, urged the court to grant his client bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.
Lawal adjourned the matter till January 27, 2020, for hearing.
