The Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) has expressed its support for the scrapping of the payment of acceptance fees in the universities.

The Motion for the scrapping of the acceptance fee was said to have been moved by Mr. Emeka Chinedu, Imo (Abiasu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency) before the House of Representatives and was unanimously backed by the Honourable members of the House.

The position of LAWSAN, under the leadership of Emmanuel Nwobodo, was made known by Munir Shuaibu Ishaq, the National Director of the Directorate of Students’ Rights in a press statement dated 2nd December, 2019 and made available to TheNigeraLawyer (TNL).

Munir says acceptance fee in admission process is devoid of legal reasoning as advertisement for admissions by universities is called invitation to treat in law and purchase of forms applying for admission by students is an offer.

The university is thereafter left with option to either accept or reject the offer. He describes as “laughable” calling for an offeror to pay an acceptance fee instead of the offeree who occasioned the acceptance.

“In the light of the foregoing, the Directorate strongly commends the move, and hereby urges the National Assembly to endeavor to see that the motion sees the light of the day, acceptance fee should be scrapped!” he said.
