Ekiti State Governor, John Kayode Fayemi, has granted clemency to 18 prisoners in the Nigerian Correctional Services facilities in Ado Ekiti and Kirikiri Maximum, Lagos State.

This was made known in a statement by the Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda, made available to TheNigerialawyer that the decision was born out of recommendations made by Ekiti State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, ACPM, to grant clemency to 18 prisoners serving various prison sentences in the Nigerian Correctional Services facilities in Ekiti State and Kirikiri Maximum, Lagos State, respectively.

The commissioner also stated that the governor also granted State Pardon to one applicant. Explaining the process, Fapohunda said, “the ACPM considered 50 applications for clemency at its third sitting.

“The applications of these beneficiaries were granted because they have individually demonstrated the potential to turn their lives around,” the state’s law officer said. Giving a break down of the lucky beneficiaries, the commissioner said that Abologborin Omo got the only state pardon.

Two, Tunde Abe and Adeniyi Owolabi, got COMMUNAL of death sentences to life imprisonment. In all, 16 convicts got released from prison and they are Olowo Ajayi, Ojo Sunday, Sunday Fanimara, Olusuyi Dare Olaifa, Williams Sunday, Sylvanus Oferufega, Lucky Suberu, Babatunde Ogunjobi, Tope Ajayi, Lawrence Idowu Bamidele, Ogunboyo Richard, Ayodele Ayinde, Adebayo Ojo, Akeem Adebayo, Abirifon Julius, and Abirifon Olabode.

Admonition them on behalf of the council, the state attorney general said that it is that state’s expectation that these beneficiaries will make the best use of this second chance by being law-abiding and good citizens.
