A customer with Sterling Bank, Mr Aina Adewale, has urged the Consumer Protection Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria to probe the circumstances leading to the withdrawal of N432,400 from his bank account without his authorisation.

In a letter by his lawyer, Mr Tope Ashalou, Adewale said the money was withdrawn from his Sterling Bank account on November 2, 2018, after his debit card was withheld by a Union Bank ATM at Sheriff Hotel, Ikorodu at about 5.45pm.

He said he had inserted his card into the machine in an attempt to make a withdrawal but the machine went off after he had entered his PIN.

Adewale said the security man he complained to asked him to return the following day to complain to the bank.

He said not satisfied with the security man’s suggestion, he returned to the ATM and after waiting for about 10 minutes the machine came on again and not less than 10 persons withdrew money from it.

Adewale said when it was obvious that he would not get back his card withheld by the machine, he left but it was not up to 30 minutes when he started receiving withdrawal alerts on his phone.

“A total sum of N432,400 was eventually withdrawn within less than 30 minutes,” he said.

Adewale said he lodged a complaint at Sterling Bank “but all efforts made to seek explanation from the bank were futile and the bank is still holding onto my ATM card till today.

“We equally lodged a complaint at the police station and the police refused to be of assistance probably because of my financial predicament and lack of fund.”

Adewale said though the bank refused to accept liability for the unauthorised withdrawal, it later made a refund of N110,000 to him.

“Our client approached the bank to ask why only N110,000 was refunded and why the refund at all if it is true that the bank was not complicit in the transaction as our client was initially made to believe.

“It is worthy of note that no concrete explanation has been offered by the bank as we write this letter,” the lawyer said.

He urged the CBN to investigate the case and sanction anyone found complicit.
