An associate of the activist, Dare Atoye, informed our correspondent in Abuja that Adeyanju, who has been in custody since last week Thursday, was taken to Kano on Tuesday morning. Adeyanju’s lawyer, Tolu Babaleye, had stated that his client was being detained in connection with a murder charge for which he and three others had been acquitted over nine years ago. Addressing journalists on the development, Atoye accused the Federal Government of using the Nigeria Police Force to persecute Adeyanju. “In this latest act of desperation by the President Muhammadu Buhari government to silence, detain and possibly eliminate Adeyanju, the Nigeria Police have now illegally and wickedly elected to review a case of culpable homicide on which he was discharged and acquitted about 10 years ago, ignoring the long-established principle of ‘Utre Fois Acquit’, which makes the case a dead issue that cannot be reawakened,” he said. Atoye alleged that the activist was taken to Kano by the government in order to execute its plot against him. The legal practitioner said, “We are compelled, therefore, to state unequivocally that should anything untoward happen to our comrade, Deji Adeyanju, the remaining days of the present regime shall witness neither peace nor tranquillity. “While the Buhari government and police have, in flagrant violation of our laws, chosen to embark on this fruitless voyage of illegal discovery, we are shocked by their recoil into ethno-religious biases and vendetta, arresting Adeyanju, the only Yoruba Christian in a group of four persons that included three Hausa-Fulanis, who were discharged and acquitted.”]]>
