Pan African Lawyers Union made this resolution at  the just successfully concluded three-day Annual Conference and General Meeting held at Tunis, Tunisia which started on 29th September, 2018. At the conference a new Executive Committee, to be led by Nigerian lawyer Emeka Obegolu, to steer it for the next three years (2018 – 2020.)were elected. Emeka defeated Eric Mutua of Kenya who was  Vice President, East Africa. Emeka Obegolu replaced Elijah Banda SC, a lawyer from Zambia, who led the organization from 2014 to 2018, The PALU Women Lawyers were not left out as they held an impressive  one-day meeting on the place of women in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Union held a successful three-day conference with the theme One Continent, One People, One Economy: Developing Africa through continental free trade and free movement. The new Legal Counsel of the African Union, Amb. Dr. (Ms.) Namira Negm gave one of the key note speeches, on the state of economic and legal developments in the continent. The Tunisian Minister of Justice, Mr. Ghazi Jeribi, formally opened the Conference, while the Minister for International Co-operation, Development and Investment, Mr. Zied Ladhari, formally closed it. Other key speakers included senior officials of the African Development Bank (AfDB), African Legal Support Facility (ALSF), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), as well as the Head of the International Organisation for Migration’s (IOM) Liaison Office to the African Union, Mr. Maureen Achieng’. Other speakers included eminent Senegalese lawyer, Ibrahima Kane, who heads the African Union Advocacy Office of the Open Society Foundations, as well as the PALU Chief Executive Officer, Kenyan lawyer Donald Deya. The PALU Women Lawyers Forum held an impressive one-day meeting on the place of women in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with support from UN Women, which has recently published a Report on the issue. At the General Meeting, held on Saturday 29th September, the members elected Mr. Emeka Jude Phillipe Obegolu (Nigeria) as President. He replaces respected Zambian lawyer, Mr. Elijah Banda SC (Zambia), who led the organization from 2014. The President of the Gambian Bar Association, Ms. Rachel Mendy, presented an Award to PALU, in recognition of the important role that it played in supporting the Gambian Bar and the people of Gambia during their tense transition after their former President, Yahya Jammeh, who had tried to stay in office unconstitutionally, after losing elections. The new Executive Committee assumes leadership at a critical time in the life of the organization as it strives to meet its members’ aspirations for a more effective and member-centered organization, with amendments made to the PALU Constitution to open it up more to its members, and to contribute more assertively to the political, economic, social and cultural development of the continent, based on a just rule of law. Diaspora members of the organization have also demanded to be better integrated in all of its affairs. The newly elected Executive Committee consists of: –
