The National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has revealed that Nigeria is responsible for 70 per cent of the estimated 11 million illegal arms and light weapons circulating in West Africa.
The South-South Zonal Director of the NCCSALW, Mr. Alex Ebimiebo, made this disclosure on Friday during the Naval Warfare Course 9 Inter-Agency Seminar organised by the Naval War College in Calabar.
Presenting a paper titled “Strengthening Security Agencies’ Collaboration to Counter Illicit Arms Proliferation for Enhanced National Security in Nigeria,” Ebimiebo said illegal arms were largely responsible for Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, which has displaced 2.2 million people internally and forced about 26,000 others to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.
He explained that arms proliferation had triggered economic distortions, fueled violent crimes, and undermined peacebuilding efforts nationwide. Ebimiebo stressed the need for a collective national response, noting that the NCCSALW was extending its fight against the menace beyond security agencies to society at large.
“As a result, everybody is a stakeholder. We need to involve the whole society in this fight, and the Centre has a lot of programmes for collaboration with our sister agencies. We also have advocacy and sensitisation programmes that we take to members of the general public from time to time,” he said.
Also speaking, the Commandant of the Naval War College, Rear Admiral Akinola Oludude, expressed concern over the influx of illicit arms into Nigeria since 2020, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to national security if not urgently tackled.
