The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has revealed that it received 46 formal requests for the creation of new states and 117 proposals for new local government areas (LGAs) from interest groups across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

This was disclosed in a document made available by the committee, which is currently considering inputs for constitutional amendments to address issues of governance, equity, and representation.

The list, which spans the North East, North West, North Central, South East, and South South regions, reflects renewed agitation for political restructuring and grassroots development across the country.

Below is the full list of proposed new states as submitted:

North East Zone

  1. Savannah State – from Borno
  2. Kwararafa State – from Taraba
  3. Katagum State – from Bauchi
  4. Amana State – from Adamawa
  5. Sardauna State – from Taraba
  6. Muri State – from Taraba

North West Zone

  1. Gurara State – from Kaduna
  2. New Kaduna State – from Kaduna
  3. Hadejia State – from Jigawa
  4. Gobir State – from Sokoto
  5. Kainji State – from Kebbi and Niger
  6. Tiga State – from Kano
  7. Ghari State – from Kano

North Central Zone

  1. Edu State – from Niger
  2. Okun State – from Kogi
  3. Okura State – from Kogi
  4. South Plateau State – from Plateau
  5. Lowland State – from Plateau
  6. Plateau State (New Carve) – from existing Plateau
  7. New Kogi State – from Kogi, Nasarawa, and Edo
  8. Ifesowapo State – from Kwara
  9. Abuja State – from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
  10. Apa State – from Benue
  11. Apa-Agba State – from Benue
  12. Ayatutu State – from Benue

South East Zone

  1. Orashi State – from Anambra, Imo, and Rivers
  2. Orlu State – from the South East zone
  3. Anioma State – from the South East zone
  4. Etiti State – from the South East zone
  5. Aba State – from the South East zone
  6. Adada State – from Enugu

South South Zone

  1. Atlantic City State – from Rivers
  2. Bori State – from Rivers
  3. Iwuroha State – from Rivers
  4. Obolo State – from Akwa Ibom
  5. Warri State – from Delta
  6. Toru-Ebe State – from Bayelsa

Pending Submissions from South West

The committee did not list any state creation proposals from the South West zone in the released document.

The House Committee has assured Nigerians that all requests will be subjected to due legislative and constitutional scrutiny, in line with provisions for state creation under Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
