Cape Verde goalkeeper, Josimar José Évora Dias, popularly known as Vozinha, has become one of the biggest stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a heroic performance against Spain, an emotional personal revelation, and an extraordinary rise on social media.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper became a global sensation after helping Cape Verde secure a shocking 0-0 draw against tournament favourites Spain in Atlanta on Monday, June 15, 2026.

Vozinha faced 27 shots and made seven crucial saves, denying Spanish stars including Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.

His performance earned him FIFA’s official Man of the Match award and immediately placed him at the centre of global football attention.

The feat was even more remarkable because Cape Verde were making their first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

At 40 years and 12 days old, Vozinha reportedly became the oldest player in football history to feature in a country’s first World Cup match.

His story also resonated because of his unusual football journey. Unlike many modern football stars who begin their professional careers early, Vozinha did not sign his first professional contract until he was 25 years old.

Over his career, he has played for clubs across Cape Verde, Portugal, Angola, Cyprus, Slovakia and Moldova.

He also spent the last two years with G.D. Chaves in Portugal’s second division.

For Cape Verde’s national team, known as the Blue Sharks, Vozinha has earned 91 caps since 2012 and played a key role in the country’s qualification campaign, keeping seven clean sheets in 10 matches.

However, it was not only his performance against Spain that captured global attention.

After the match, Vozinha broke down in tears during his post-match press conference as he revealed that his mother, Ana Candida Evora, could not travel to watch him make history because of a strict $15,000 United States visa bond requirement.

The emotional interview went viral across TikTok, Instagram Reels and other social media platforms, drawing sympathy from football fans around the world.

The story reportedly prompted political intervention, with United States House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said to have intervened to waive the fees so Vozinha’s mother could attend Cape Verde’s next match against Uruguay in Miami.

Vozinha’s emotional moment turned an already inspiring football story into a deeply personal human-interest story.

The goalkeeper’s social media following also exploded within days.

Before the Spain match, Vozinha’s Instagram account, @vozinha1, reportedly had between 50,000 and 56,000 followers.

Within two hours of his clean sheet against Spain, the account crossed 2 million followers. Less than 24 hours later, it had reportedly risen to between 7 million and 10 million followers.

He is now said to have more than 12.5 million followers, placing him ahead of some major global sports figures.

The dramatic rise was driven partly by support from major internet personalities, including Brazilian sports broadcaster Casimiro and his network CazéTV, who reportedly urged millions of viewers during the live broadcast to follow Vozinha’s Instagram account.

Fans also flooded his page after his emotional press conference went viral.

Several fan-made edits, including an AI-generated anime-style video portraying him as a superhero stopping Spanish shots, further boosted his online popularity.

Reports said that when Vozinha checked his phone in the locker room after the match and saw his new follower count, he gasped, laughed in disbelief and muttered: “Crazy, that’s crazy.”

From a late-blooming professional career to a historic World Cup debut, a heroic performance against Spain, and a tearful story about his mother’s inability to travel, Vozinha has become one of the most powerful underdog stories of the 2026 World Cup.

His rise has transformed him from a respected Cape Verde veteran into a global symbol of perseverance, family sacrifice and football’s ability to create unlikely heroes.
