The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Welfare Committee, Y. C. Maikyau, SAN, has congratulated the Yola Branch on its ongoing 2021 Annual Law Week which commenced on 17th January, 2022 and will end on 22nd of January, 2022.

Maikyau, in a goodwill message made available to TheNigeriaLawyer, commended the Yola Branch of NBA for choosing the theme “Legal practice in covid era: lesson learnt” because according to him, the virus came with consequences which include high rate of unemployment.

He said, “It is with immense delight that I felicitate with the executive Committee and the entire members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yola, Branch, on the auspicious occasion of the Branch’s 2022 Law Week, which commence on the 17th – 22nd January, 2022, and accords with the long established legal tradition witnessed every year.

Consequently, the theme of this year’s Law week, to wit: “legal practice in covid era: lessons learnt”

Although covid era has been devastating and has caused a huge challenge in the legal profession. The greatest negative impact that the epidemic had on the profession in Nigeria is the high unemployment rate. Many lawyers were on furlough, as law firms and other organisations try to downsize and cut costs in response to the global pandemic.”

Maikyau, however added that the Covid-19 also had a positive side. He noted that there was increased use of webinars as a result of Covid-19 and virus led many lawyers to being tech savvy.

“However, Covid-19 has brought about some positive developments in the profession. One of these is the increase in the use of webinar for conferences, meetings and settling disputes and also the increase in online court hearings in superior courts.

“In conclusion, the crisis has led lawyers into being innovative and tech/internet savvy.

“Needless to say that conferences, board meetings and increasingly, court proceedings are all taking place online.

“I congratulate members of the Branch once again for this giant stride and pray
that this Year’s Law week shall usher in tremendous advancements in all
ramifications to the Legal profession.

“Long Live NBA YOLA Branch!
Long Live the Nigerian Bar Association!!
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!”
