Last week, the Bayelsa State government announced that the Gbaran-Ubie Integrated Oil and Gas facility would be sealed up. That plant is the property of the Shell Petroleum Company of Nigeria. The Bayelsa State government said that it sealed the facility in response to a court injunction authorizing the eviction of all occupants from the premises. This eviction is intended to allow the Physical Planning and Development Board of the State to conduct environmental, health, and technical integrity evaluations on the facility. Those summoned are Iboro Ige-Edaba, the Executive Secretary of Bayelsa State Physical Planning and Development Board and Kemela Okara, the Commissioner for Trade, Industry & Investment. That facility is alleged to have been built without the necessary building permits, as required by law.]]>
