In a bold spiritual and strategic move to confront the escalating insecurity in Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has declared Monday, May 19, 2025, as a day of voluntary fasting and prayer for peace across the state.

The governor made the announcement in a statewide broadcast from Maiduguri on Saturday, calling on all residents to unite in a collective act of faith and resilience in the face of renewed insurgent attacks and mounting security threats across the region.

“In light of our current security challenges, I am calling on all residents of Borno State to unite in a collective act of faith and solidarity,” Zulum said. “This Monday, I am inviting you to join me in a voluntary day of fasting and prayer for peace to reign in Borno State, the Northeast, and indeed the entire country.”

Describing the initiative as a communal spiritual act, Zulum emphasized that fasting was more than a religious observance — it is an expression of shared hope and unity. “Through prayer and reflection, we can strengthen our unity, renew our resilience, and restore our collective purpose,” he added.

While urging public participation in the fast, Governor Zulum assured residents that his administration remains actively engaged in multi-level security interventions. He disclosed that the Borno State Government has intensified collaboration with the Federal Government and national security agencies.

“I have held extensive consultations with our federal partners and the leadership of various security agencies. The collaboration between Borno State and the Federal Government is stronger than ever,” he noted.

According to the governor, current efforts include enhanced intelligence-sharing, logistical upgrades, and improved welfare and support for troops and local security operatives.

Zulum also reiterated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Service Chiefs to restoring peace in the state. “They have given us assurances that everything possible will be done to end the current insecurity,” he said.

Governor Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to reinforce community-based security structures, including the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), hunters, and vigilante groups. These grassroots units, he said, are crucial in intelligence gathering and early-warning responses.

In a stern warning, he said:

“Let me caution individuals or communities against collaborating with insurgents. These armed groups are enemies of our collective peace.”

Zulum extended condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces over the recent loss of personnel in ongoing military operations and offered prayers for the bereaved families.

Addressing another critical issue, the governor acknowledged the ongoing water scarcity affecting Maiduguri, Jere, and surrounding communities. He attributed the shortage to infrastructure damage caused by the devastating floods of September 10, 2023.

“My administration has been working tirelessly to restore the affected pipelines, and I appeal for continued patience as we finalize repairs,” he said.

To tackle the recent surge in urban criminality, Zulum announced the reconstitution of the Anti-Social Vices Committee, which will focus on curbing violent crimes and restoring order in Maiduguri and other urban centres.

“We will not allow criminal elements to destabilise the progress we are making — insha Allah,” he affirmed.

Governor Zulum concluded his broadcast with a passionate call for collective unity and perseverance.

“We are fully aware that the road to lasting peace is not an easy one. But with unity, perseverance, and faith, we shall overcome — insha Allah.”

He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and all citizens to partner with government efforts to secure communities, restore normalcy, and rebuild a thriving Borno.
