The Governing Council of the Young Lawyers Forum (National) read with dismay an untamed statement proffered by Inibehe Effiong vide social media as hereinabove quoted, wherein Inibehe Effiong rudely and in flagrant disrespect he delusions the NBA President; Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud SAN over his reprimanding speech delivered at the just concluded NEC Meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara State against the contemporaneous alarming and disrespectful statements by some Young Lawyers on social media. While the sacrosanct tradition of Respect within the legal profession needs no further emphasis, we wish to reiterate that, no matter how aggrieved a lawyer is, the use of oppressive, saucy, insulting utterances can’t stand as a remedy to express one’s displeasure. Worrisome enough, such statement as that of Inibehe Effiong is not only an affront on the office of Mr. President, it also puts the Nigerian Young Lawyers in bad light and send a defiant and imminent threat against the legal profession as a whole which is unacceptable in its entirety. Thus, unless decisive proactive measure is taken thereof, else the future of our noble profession is at stake. We understand that, many young Lawyers have their grievances concerning the Bar, but we must learn how to express ourselves in a manner that is in consonance with our Rules of Professional Conduct. We therefore intensely call on Young Lawyers to desist from uttering or further publishing any unguarded and disrespectful statements on social media or elsewhere as the culprits may expose themselves to disciplinary measures in addition to action for defamation of character. We therefore condemn unequivocally the disrespectful, rude, deliberately misguided and ill-conceived depiction of the young lawyer by name Inibehe Effiong and further caution other colleagues not to emulate such misconduct. The Bar belongs to all of us, let us strive to uphold the ethics of our profession and preserve it for future generations. We look forward to receiving you all at the upcoming Young Lawyers Summit where we can brainstorm and deliberate on the future of the Young Lawyers. Long live Young Lawyers Forum! Long live Nigerian Bar Association!! And Long live Nigerian Legal Profession!!! Signed: Zakariya M. Umar, Esq. (Pub. Sec. YLF National) For: Wada A. Wada Esq. (Chairman, YLF National) Dated this 3rd March, 2018.]]>
