President Bola Tinubu has indicated that he may not attend every campaign rally across the country as the All Progressives Congress (APC) intensifies preparations for the 2027 presidential election, saying the demands of governance require his continued attention.

Tinubu spoke on Wednesday while inaugurating the APC Presidential Campaign Council at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where he charged party leaders and members of the council to take the administration’s record, policies and campaign message to Nigerians across states, local government areas and wards.

The President said he had accepted advice from Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, that the rigours of campaigning should not distract him from his responsibilities as President.

“You have warned me and asked me not to allow the rigour of the campaign to distract me from governance. I hear you. I am in full agreement with your decision,” Tinubu said.

“Nigeria needs more attention now than ever before. The responsibility of this office does not pause.”

Tinubu said that while he would still create opportunities to speak directly with Nigerians during the campaign, members of the Presidential Campaign Council would be expected to take greater responsibility for mobilisation across the country.

“However, I will still make time to speak directly with Nigerians, even as you lead the campaign in the states and local government areas. So you will excuse me from going everywhere with you,” he said.

The President also linked his decision to remain focused on governance to the country’s financial and economic obligations, stressing that government business could not be suspended because of electioneering.

“The job must go on. We have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait. We want those investors to come in, be here to stay, to invest for the future of our children,” he said.

Tinubu described the inauguration of the campaign council as more than the formal commencement of another political campaign, saying it represented a renewal of the ruling party’s commitment to Nigerians.

“We have not gathered merely to inaugurate a council. We have gathered to renew a covenant, a covenant with the Nigerian people and the historic responsibility they have entrusted to us as Nigeria’s governing party,” he said.

He charged members of the council to communicate the administration’s vision, record and agenda to Nigerians and urged party leaders not to take previous electoral successes for granted.

According to the President, party members must demonstrate commitment at the grassroots and work to deliver their respective electoral wards during the election.

The APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, also tasked the campaign council with taking the administration’s policies and achievements to voters, saying the party intended to campaign on its record, challenges and plans for the future.

He said the campaign should be centred on ideas, policies and the administration’s record while being conducted peacefully and with respect for Nigerians.

Uzodimma, who also serves as Secretary of the Presidential Campaign Council, assured Tinubu that APC governors and other party leaders would take the campaign message to Nigerians while allowing the President to concentrate on governance.

The campaign council is led by former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari, as Director-General. The APC presidential campaign is expected to formally begin in Kaduna on October 24.
