The Chairman Welfare Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Y.C Maikyau,SAN, has called for the upward review of the salaries and allowances of Judges and Justices of Appellate Courts in Nigeria.

Maikyau, SAN, made this remark while delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria(BOSAN) Sokoto Chapter, during the commissioning of the remodeled Sokoto State High Court  Complex, by the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Mattawallen Sokoto.

The Learned  Silk commended the thoughtfulness and efforts of the Governor, in not only recognizing the need to provide a conducive working environment for the Judiciary in the administration of Justice, but also for giving back to the constituency that nurtured his Excellency.

Maikyau, SAN congratulated the Chief Judge of Sokoto State and called upon the Court to continue to do the Nation proud, recalling how the Sokoto State Judiciary produced some of the best judicial minds in Nigeria.

Maikyau SAN,  referred to their Lordships, Hon. Justice U.A Kalgo JSC(Rtd),  Hon. Justice Uthman Muhammed JSC(Rtd) and now, Hon. Justice  A.A Augie JSC and Hon. Justice ML Garba JSC, all of whom rose to the apex Court from the Sokoto State High Court Bench.

He further noted that such gesture by the Governor is one of those gestures that will certainly enhance the smooth administration of Justice as well as obviate the necessity for the sort of strike presently embarked upon by JUSUN.

He however decried the poor remuneration and allowances paid to Judges and Justices of the Appellate Courts in Nigeria.

Noting that, the last time the Salaries and allowances of Judges and Justices were reviewed by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, was in 2007.

He further observed, that Judges of the High Court who get elevated to the Court of Appeal, despite the sacrifice to serve the Nation at a higher level, earn far less than what they received as High Court Judges, with only the addition of “JCA” to their names and having their Judgments printed in law reports, as the only measure of benefit for their elevation to take on higher responsibilities.

In conclusion, he took the liberty of the presence of the AGF, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN, to call upon the Federal Government to seriously consider an upward review of the salaries and allowances of Justices, whose discharge of their Constitutional duties has been responsible for keeping our dear Nation together.
