The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of Abuja-based businesswoman, Mrs. Chineze Ozoadibe, who was wrongfully arrested over alleged involvement in illegal bunkering. The DSS chief also awarded her N10 million as compensation.

In addition, Mr. Ajayi directed that five other individuals, who were similarly wrongfully detained, share a total of N10 million in compensation.

A credible security source explained that Mrs. Ozoadibe’s arrest occurred during an operation to dismantle an illegal oil bunkering syndicate. “Some suspects, including the businesswoman, were transferred to the DSS by a sister security agency. During investigations, DSS officers discovered that her arrest was coincidental. Convinced of her innocence, the DG ordered her release and compensation,” the source said.

The source further noted that this move reflects a new culture under Mr. Ajayi’s leadership. “The release of wrongfully arrested and detained persons, alongside awarding compensation, has become standard practice since Mr. Ajayi assumed office. This is not an isolated case; it is consistent with his professional approach,” the source added.

Recalling a past case, the source said, “Remember the Jos-based businessman mistakenly shot by the DSS in 2016? It took eight years and the arrival of Mr. Ajayi for the Service to honor the N10 million awarded by a Federal High Court. He not only paid the amount but doubled it to N20 million and included free medical care for life.”

The source emphasized that Mr. Ajayi recognizes human fallibility. “On assuming office, he instructed personnel to be meticulous in their operations and to admit mistakes when they occur. This principle drives the release and compensation of wrongfully detained individuals,” the source said.

To prevent future errors, the DG has directed the legal department to ensure that due process is strictly followed in all DSS operations. “All Investigation Officers are now required to conduct proper investigations before making any arrests,” the source added.
