In celebration of World Intellectual Property Day themed “Music: Feel the Beat of IP”, Nigerian legal and creative economy advocate, Former NBA Garki Branch Chair Folarinwa Aluko, has called on the Federal and State Governments to implement urgent digital economy reforms to empower Nigeria’s booming creative sector.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s rich musical heritage, Aluko emphasized that music is not just entertainment, but a living archive of the nation’s history, aspirations, and cultural enterprise. He noted that even before the global rise of Afrobeats, Nigerian rhythms such as the Bata drum had already influenced musical styles as far away as the Americas.
Citing global statistics, Aluko highlighted that the music industry generates over $28 billion annually, contributing 3% to global GDP and supporting more than 30 million jobs. In Nigeria, the creative sector, valued at over $8 billion, continues to reshape global narratives through its vibrant artists.
However, Aluko lamented that Nigerian creators still face major obstacles, particularly in earning and repatriating international royalties. He urged government authorities to liberalize the digital economy, dismantle administrative barriers, and establish efficient global payment systems to facilitate cross-border transactions.
To further stimulate growth, Aluko proposed targeted tax incentives such as withholding tax waivers, export duty exemptions, and reliefs on qualifying creative income, stressing that sustainable protection of intellectual property must be central to Nigeria’s economic strategy.
He commended the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Nigeria Office and the Institut Français for their efforts in promoting Nigerian music and cultural expressions internationally.
“As we feel the beat of innovation,” Aluko stated, “we must also build the strong economic foundations that allow Nigerian creativity to thrive — both at home and abroad.”
