A fresh case of Ebola virus disease has been reported in Abuja, with officials saying a woman who recently returned to Nigeria from Uganda tested positive for the virus at Nizamiye Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory.

Officials familiar with the development said the case was confirmed at the Turkish-run private hospital, prompting health authorities to begin measures aimed at preventing further transmission of the disease.

The identity and age of the patient were not disclosed, while further details about when she arrived in Nigeria, her travel route and the number of people who may have come in contact with her were also not immediately available.

According to the information available, the Federal Ministry of Health has begun releasing resources for surveillance, contact tracing and other containment measures following the detection of the case.

The development comes amid ongoing Ebola outbreaks in parts of Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Kenya. WHO has been issuing continuing updates and supporting response efforts in affected countries.

The reported Abuja case has heightened concerns because of the possibility of cross-border transmission through international travel, particularly from countries currently dealing with Ebola infections.

Health authorities are expected to identify and monitor individuals who may have had contact with the patient as part of efforts to prevent community transmission.

At the time of the initial report, however, detailed information had not been released on the laboratory confirmation, the patient’s condition, whether she had been placed in isolation or the number of contacts already identified.

WHO guidance on Ebola outbreaks emphasises early detection, case investigation, isolation and systematic contact tracing as critical measures for interrupting transmission.
