A heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday damaged sections of the newly built Kugbo Bus Terminal in Nyanya, Abuja, causing significant debris to scatter onto the adjacent Nyanya-Keffi Expressway and triggering hours-long traffic chaos during evening rush hour.

The terminal, inaugurated by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in June 2025 — about nine months ago — has not yet been put into operational use.

Strong winds during the rainstorm tore off large sections of its roof, with twisted metal sheets and other materials spilling onto the busy highway, obstructing vehicular movement and worsening congestion as commuters headed home.

The storm also caused minor damage to the nearby Nyanya pedestrian bridge and some buildings in the area.

Preliminary reports confirm no injuries or vehicle damage occurred.

In an official statement, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, confirmed the incident.

“Windstorm has damaged some parts of the Kugbo Bus Terminal, Nyanya, Abuja. The windstorm, which occurred during a heavy rainfall a few hours ago, also caused a minor damage to the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and some buildings in the area,” Olayinka stated.

“From preliminary reports, no one was injured, and no vehicle was damaged.”

Olayinka disclosed that the FCT Minister has directed immediate action to address the situation.

"Windstorm Damages Kugbo Bus Terminal" — Heavy Gridlock Hits Nyanya-Keffi Expressway As Debris From Wike-Commissioned Facility Scatters Onto Highway

“To prevent breakdown of law and order, as well as free flow of traffic, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed that security men be deployed to the scene, while immediate action will be taken towards fixing the damages caused by the windstorm,” the statement read.

Efforts were underway to clear the debris and restore traffic flow as of press time.

The Kugbo Bus Terminal was part of infrastructure projects in the FCT aimed at easing transportation challenges in the federal capital.

Despite being inaugurated nine months ago, the facility has not yet been put into operational use.

Its partial collapse shortly after commissioning has drawn public attention and criticism online regarding construction quality and durability.

Nigerians on social media questioned the quality of construction of the terminal, with many asking how a newly built facility could suffer such significant damage from a single windstorm.

Some commentators called for an investigation into the contractors responsible for the project and the materials used in its construction.

Others noted that the terminal’s failure to withstand normal weather conditions raises questions about the durability of other infrastructure projects commissioned in the FCT.

Commuters have been advised to use alternative routes where possible while clearance and repairs continue.

The Nyanya-Keffi Expressway is one of the busiest routes in Abuja, serving as a major artery for residents commuting between the satellite towns of Nasarawa State and the federal capital.

The damage to the Kugbo Bus Terminal nine months after its inauguration raises serious questions about the quality of infrastructure projects in the FCT.

That a newly constructed terminal — yet to even become operational — could suffer significant roof damage from a windstorm suggests potential issues with either the design, materials, or construction quality of the facility.

For the FCT Administration, the incident is an embarrassment, particularly given the fanfare that accompanied the terminal’s inauguration by Minister Wike in June 2025.

The fact that the terminal has remained non-operational for nine months after commissioning, and has now suffered storm damage before serving a single commuter, will likely intensify public scrutiny of FCT infrastructure projects.

Questions that will need to be answered include: Why was the terminal not put into use after inauguration? What was the quality assurance process during construction? Were appropriate materials and building standards used? And who bears responsibility for the apparent failure of the structure to withstand normal weather conditions?

For commuters who endured hours of gridlock on the Nyanya-Keffi Expressway due to debris from a terminal meant to ease their transportation challenges, the irony will not be lost.

The FCT Administration’s promise of “immediate action” to fix the damages will be closely watched, as will any investigation into why the terminal failed so soon after being built.
