The White House has again threatened to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from office over allegations that she made false statements while obtaining two mortgages in Georgia.

In a letter dated August 5, the White House notified Cook that President Donald Trump was considering removing her from her position and directed her to respond in writing to the allegations by August 26.
The letter described the notice as formal and said the process followed a recent Supreme Court decision requiring that Cook be given notice of the allegations against her and an opportunity to respond before any removal.
“The Supreme Court recently determined that you are entitled to notice of the allegations against you and an opportunity to respond prior to your removal,” the letter stated.
The White House letter also referenced an attached criminal referral relating to the mortgage allegations.
Trump had attempted to remove Cook in 2025, accusing her of improperly stating on mortgage applications that two different properties were her primary residence in order to obtain lower interest rates.
Cook has since been challenging the action in court.
Under federal law, members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors can only be removed by the President “for cause,” a standard generally understood to require serious misconduct.
The Supreme Court had ruled in June that Cook could remain in her position while lower courts continue to consider the rest of the case.
Reacting to the latest letter, Cook’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, dismissed the allegations as baseless.
Lowell said the claims were “as baseless now as they were a year ago,” insisting that there was no lawful basis to remove Cook from office.
“No matter what President Trump tries to do next, this much is clear under the facts and Supreme Court precedent — there is no valid cause for removing Governor Cook,” Lowell said.
