Liberous Oshoma, a lawyer, writer, and social, economic, and public affairs commentator, has raised concerns over the funding and purpose of Governor Nyesom Wike’s frequent media engagements, questioning who actually benefits from the high-profile broadcasts.
In a YouTube clip, Oshoma asked, “Who is funding Wike’s media chats, and who truly benefits from his consistent media engagements?” He emphasized that in any country aspiring to responsible leadership, citizens must be proactive followers who hold their leaders accountable by asking questions.
He criticized what he described as excessive and personal media grandstanding, noting that the FCT Minister appears to act as both a de facto Minister of Information and a de facto president in government communications. According to Oshoma, the minister regularly spends hours on television programs, highlighting personal histories while simultaneously criticizing others. “Ob vans are out beaming these things—whose benefit is it? Is it for the government or for personal political gains?” he asked.
Oshoma also questioned the source of funding for these media activities, urging transparency regarding whether public funds, particularly from the Consolidated Fund, are being spent for political purposes rather than governance.
While acknowledging infrastructural developments such as roads and bridges, Oshoma warned that human capital development remains neglected. He highlighted that many young people are left restless, turning to criminal activities such as kidnapping, internet fraud, prostitution, and other social vices. “What is the essence of roads without human capital development?” he asked, emphasizing the need for investment in youth and education.
He further criticized leaders who boast on television while simultaneously undermining opposition voices, accusing them of grandstanding and using public platforms to insult dissenters. Oshoma also questioned the political consistency of leaders, pointing out that some who previously criticized the APC are now aligned with it.
Concluding, Oshoma stressed that citizens must persistently ask questions about leadership, accountability, and the allocation of public funds. “Until we begin to ask these leaders these questions, we will never progress. People will come and think they are doing us a favor, when in reality, they are advancing their own political interests,” he said.
