United States President Donald J. Trump has intensified pressure on Nigeria over allegations of mass killings of Christians, saying Washington will not tolerate the violence and ordering the Pentagon to prepare for possible military action, the White House has said.

Speaking briefly to journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday after a trip to Florida, Mr. Trump insisted that Christians in Nigeria were being killed in large numbers. “They are killing record numbers of Christians in Nigeria. They are killing the Christians and killing them in large numbers. We are not going to allow that to happen,” he said in a short video clip.

Trump’s renewed focus follows public claims by a range of US voices that violence in Nigeria is targeting Christians. Conservative commentator Bill Maher alleged that Islamist groups have carried out a campaign of mass violence against Christians, while Senator Ted Cruz accused some Nigerian officials of ignoring or facilitating attacks by jihadist groups. Representative Riley Moore urged the State Department to designate Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern and called for a suspension of arms sales until the Nigerian government demonstrates a commitment to protecting religious minorities.

In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Mr. Trump announced that he had designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern under US law, saying that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria” and accusing “radical Islamists” of carrying out a “mass slaughter.” He called on Congress and federal agencies to investigate and act. A day later he warned that the United States would “immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria” if the killings continued and said he had told his Department of War to prepare contingency plans. “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet,” he wrote.

The White House posture quickly drew a response from within the Trump orbit. Pete Hegseth, described by some outlets as the US War Secretary in the current administration, said the department was preparing for possible operations in Nigeria and reiterated the demand that the Nigerian government protect Christians or face consequences.

The Nigerian government rejected the characterization. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said in a statement posted on his official X account that the description of Nigeria as religiously intolerant “does not reflect our national reality.” He reaffirmed that Nigeria is a democracy with constitutional guarantees of religious liberty and stressed that his administration is working with international partners to protect communities of all faiths.

Sustained US pressure on the issue has been building in Washington. Lawmakers including Senator Cruz and Representative Moore have pushed for punitive measures and greater scrutiny of Nigerian security and human rights practices. Moore in particular has called for the suspension of arms transfers and technical assistance until authorities show concrete steps to stop attacks on Christian communities.

Nigerian officials say they are already taking steps to address insecurity. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, said that both presidents share a common interest in combating insurgency and that differences in perspective would be discussed if the leaders meet. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said Mr. Tinubu had already charged the new service chiefs to be decisive and proactive in tackling emerging armed groups in the North-Central, North-West and parts of the South, stressing that Nigerians expect results.
