Retired police officers have vowed to proceed with their planned nationwide protest on Monday, July 21, 2025, demanding removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The protest organisers insist that until their sole demand is met, they will continue to stage the nationwide action.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) had urged the retirees to shelve the protest and return to the negotiation table. However, the Chairman of Police Officers Retirees on Contributory Pension Scheme, Kaduna State branch, Mannir Lawal, said the strike would go on.
Lawal, a retired Chief Superintendent of Police, said, “We’re not rescinding our decisions because our leaders exempt themselves and leave us there, and they are comfortable they leave us inside. We don’t understand why.
“Those who retired on the ranks of AIG, DIG and IG are not in the system. From the rank of CP to Constable, we’re under the Contributory Pension Scheme which is not favorable to us. Many of us are dying.
“Every day, people are dying in abject poverty. That’s why we want to exit the system. Our demand is clear. We want to be exited from scheme. I can confirm to you that we have already mobilised our members across all the 36 States and the FCT, and we will march to the National Assembly tomorrow (Monday).
“People from Lagos are on the way. Those from Bauchi, Gombe, Nasarawa and Kwara have come, while others are also on the way. We’re not ready for any promise again. Our situation has deteriorated beyond reasonable doubt.
“We cannot accept any promise. I repeat, any promise is not acceptable unless we begin to see substantial alerts into our different accounts. No promise!”
In response, the Police Service Commission described the planned protest as “diversionary, ill-timed and in bad taste.” PSC Spokesman Ikechukwu Ani said all retired officers should shelve their plans and return to dialogue rather than confrontation.
Ani noted that the PSC Chairman, Hashim Argungu, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, has been actively advocating for a streamlined and democratised police pension scheme.
“The Police Service Commission has noted the ill-advised plan by retired police officers across the nation to embark on a protest over issues that are already receiving the attention of relevant Government Agencies.
“The commission says the intended protest at a time there is almost a consensus that the state/condition of some retired police officers deserve immediate consideration and improvement is diversionary and in bad taste.
“The Commission believes that relevant government agencies are currently looking into the obvious disparity with a view to bridging the gap. It advises that the affected officers should consider the path of dialogue and continuous engagement rather than confrontation.”
