*Says Payment Came Six Days After Account Details Were Submitted

The Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mbaise Branch, has denied a claim that it was denied its share of funds disbursed by the Imo State Government to Bar branches ahead of the just-concluded Annual General Conference, confirming that it received ₦50 million.
The rebuttal responds to a publication by Chinedu Agu titled “The N350 Million Imo Government Largesse To The NBA And Some Uncomfortable Questions,” and was issued by the Branch Secretary, Mrs S. C. Nwachi, Esq.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Branch confirms that it received the sum of ₦50 million from the Imo State Government towards the just-concluded Annual General Conference,” the statement said.
According to the Branch, it submitted its account details on 26 August 2026, at a dinner hosted by the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Imo State, and the payment was received on 1 September 2026.
The Branch faulted Agu for not seeking verification before publication.
“It is therefore curious that Chinedu Agu could publish such a categorical falsehood without making the elementary effort of contacting the Executive Committee of the Branch for verification,” the statement said, describing the claim that the Branch was denied its allocation as “a figment of his imagination, completely unsupported by the facts.”
It added that the episode “regrettably exposes Chinedu Agu as a rumour monger, more interested in circulating unverified narratives than establishing the truth before publication.”
The Branch cautioned him to exercise greater restraint, diligence and intellectual responsibility in future publications.
“The freedom to criticise does not confer a licence to manufacture facts, and sophisticated prose cannot transform speculation into truth,” it said. “Chinedu Agu should verify before he publishes, particularly when his assertions concern an identifiable institution whose records can easily be ascertained.”
