The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has commended the Supreme Court of Nigeria for embracing technology in justice administration, saying the legal profession and judicial institutions must innovate or risk becoming obsolete.

Osigwe spoke at the formal unveiling of the Supreme Court Electronic Filing System and the Nigeria Case Management System, attended by members of the Bench, the Bar and other stakeholders in the justice sector.

“The Supreme Court has decided that it is better to innovate than to die,” the NBA President declared, while underscoring the urgency of digital transformation in the Nigerian justice system.

He said when he received the invitation to the event, what immediately came to mind was the reality that institutions must continually evolve to remain relevant.

Drawing inspiration from the story of Nokia, once a dominant global technology company that lost its market leadership after failing to adapt to changing realities, Osigwe said institutions, businesses and professionals must embrace innovation or fade away.

According to him, whenever conversations arise around the use of technology in the administration of justice, the Supreme Court must lead the way by deploying digital tools that make justice delivery more efficient, accessible and responsive to the needs of litigants and legal practitioners.

The NBA President described the launch of the Electronic Filing System and the Nigeria Case Management System as landmark developments in the ongoing modernisation of Nigeria’s justice sector.

He said the initiatives would enhance access to justice, improve case management, reduce delays and align Nigeria’s judicial system with global best practices.

Osigwe reminded lawyers that the legal profession is not immune from technological disruption, stressing that technology is no longer optional in modern legal practice.

“We either innovate or we die,” he said.

He noted that the NBA had also taken steps to deepen digital transformation within the profession by relaunching the NBA Digital Stamp and Seal and introducing the NBA Digital Signature Studio.

According to him, the initiatives are designed to simplify legal practice, improve efficiency and strengthen the authenticity of legal documentation.

The NBA President assured the judiciary of the Association’s full support in implementing the Supreme Court’s digital initiatives.

He disclosed that the NBA would organise awareness and capacity-building programmes to familiarise lawyers across the country with the new Electronic Filing System and ensure its smooth adoption.

Osigwe congratulated the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, the Justices of the Supreme Court, the Chief Registrar and the entire judiciary for taking what he described as a bold step towards modernising Nigeria’s justice delivery system.

He expressed confidence that the successful implementation of the e-filing platform and the Nigeria Case Management System would mark a major turning point in the administration of justice in Nigeria.

The NBA President maintained that the future of legal practice belongs to institutions and professionals willing to adapt, innovate and use technology to serve justice more effectively.
