History is set to echo through the city of Warri as the legal community and the general public come together on April 23, 2025, to mark a truly remarkable milestone: 100 years of legal practice in Warri and to honour the indelible legacy of Hon. Asifo Egbe, the region’s legal trailblazer.

Exactly a century ago, on April 23, 1925, Hon. Asifo Egbe was enrolled at the Supreme Court of Nigeria, having earlier been called to the English Bar on January 26, 1925. Upon his return, he pioneered legal practice in Warri, becoming not only the first legal practitioner in the old Warri Province of the Western Region but also the first lawyer from the present-day South-South geo-political zone to be appointed a judicial officer—a magistrate—sometime in the 1930s.

The centenary celebration, themed:
“100 YEARS OF LEGAL PRACTICE IN WARRI: HONOURING THE PIONEERING EFFORTS OF HON. ASIFO EGBE,”
will bring together a distinguished audience of legal professionals, jurists, scholars, and community leaders to pay tribute to a man whose courage and commitment laid the foundation for what has become a thriving legal culture in Warri and beyond.

The commemorative events of April 23, 2025, will include a press conference and an evening session of reminiscence, where senior members of the Bar will recount formative experiences, personal insights, and historical perspectives on the evolution of legal practice in Warri—from the solitary steps of one lawyer in 1925 to the dynamic and diverse legal community of today.

Speaking ahead of the event, the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Warri Branch described the occasion as “a celebration of courage, vision, and a century-long journey of justice.” They emphasized that the event will not only honour the legacy of Hon. Asifo Egbe but also provide a moment of reflection on the contributions of the Warri Bar to the advancement of Nigeria’s legal system.

The 100-year milestone is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of one individual’s dedication to justice and the Rule of Law. Hon. Asifo Egbe’s legacy continues to inspire a new generation of lawyers in Warri and serves as a benchmark for legal excellence, integrity, and service.

As the countdown to April 23 begins, Warri prepares to host a celebration not only of history but of the enduring spirit of the legal profession.
