CAF President Patrice Motsepe has confirmed that the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will be staged in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026, dismissing speculation over a possible change of host nation and reaffirming the Confederation of African Football’s commitment to the North African country.

Motsepe made the clarification during a press conference on Friday, stating that the tournament would proceed as planned despite recent comments by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Peace Mabel, which had sparked rumours about a possible relocation. Those claims were later downplayed by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie.

“The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is going ahead. There are discussions and a lot of competition,” Motsepe said. He explained that Morocco stepped in to host the tournament when time constraints limited CAF’s options, noting that several countries had expressed interest but requested changes to the tournament schedule. According to him, altering the dates was not feasible because the competition forms part of the qualification pathway for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“As of this moment, there is still a commitment with Morocco,” he added, expressing confidence that the tournament would take place within the scheduled timeframe and be successful.

Motsepe also used the briefing to outline broader plans for CAF competitions, reaffirming that the Africa Cup of Nations will be held every four years after 2028, rather than the previous two-year cycle. He disclosed that the confederation is considering expanding the men’s tournament from 24 to 28 teams in future editions, a move aimed at increasing competitiveness and allowing more nations to participate on the continental stage, though no definitive timeline has been set.

The Africa Cup of Nations has featured 24 teams in its last four editions after expanding from 16, with the teams divided into six groups of four. Motsepe did not provide details on how a potential 28-team format would be structured but noted that the change would allow more of CAF’s 54 member associations to compete at the highest level.

He reiterated that CAF remains optimistic about the growth of African football, expressing confidence that upcoming tournaments, including those to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will further strengthen the sport across the continent.
