Prominent legal luminary and former Presidents of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and African Bar Association (ABA), Charles I. Idehen has died at the age of 83.
The current ABA President, Hannibal Uwaifo, announced Idehen’s demise in a statement released today. He highlighted Idehen’s bridge-building efforts across Africa, tireless advocacy for rule of law and human rights, and esteemed interventions resolving conflicts.
Uwaifo extolled the late Idehen as a leader, mentor and humble example for many lawyers despite his aristocratic lineage as an only child. He offered condolences to the deceased’s children and family, requesting the legal community to pray for the repose of his “giant soul.”
Charles Idehen will be remembered for his services elevating the ABA during his tenure as President. His efforts behind an independent judiciary and prosperous legal profession in Nigeria also drew praise. He was 83 years old.
Uwaifo called on lawyers and judges across Africa to light candles and pray in honour of the veteran who passed away recently. Idehen’s death represents a monumental loss for the bar associations and Nigeria’s justice system.
