Past 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), John Aikpokpo-Martins, Esq., has formally withdrawn from the 2026 NBA presidential contest in deference to the Midwest Bar Forum’s decision to concede the office to the South-West.
In a statement on Sunday titled “RE: Concession of the Office of the NBA Presidency by the Midwest to the South-West: My Position”, Aikpokpo-Martins disclosed that although he had already declared his interest in the race and invested substantial time, energy, and resources in preparation, he has chosen to prioritize the unity and collective interest of the Association over personal ambition.
The decision follows a letter from the Midwest Bar Forum to the NBA, conceding its right to field candidates for the 2026 presidency to the South-West. The concession, which is anchored on paragraph 4 of Part IV of the 2nd Schedule to the NBA Constitution, was formally noted at the NBA National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
Aikpokpo-Martins explained that while the directive required him to withdraw, he views the move as an act of fairness and equity consistent with the spirit of the Association’s constitution.
“As a past 1st Vice President of the NBA, I prioritize the unity and interests of the Association over personal ambition. The concession of the presidency to the South-West by the Midwest for reasons given to me aligns with my commitment to fairness, equity, and respect for the rule of the constitution of the Association,” he said.
He further noted that his decision was borne out of a desire to foster peaceful coexistence and inclusiveness within the Bar, while also reaffirming his readiness to serve the Association in any capacity whenever called upon.
Looking ahead, Aikpokpo-Martins expressed optimism that his presidential ambition remains alive, with the office set to return to the Midwest in 2032.
“I hereby withdraw my intention to contest for the office of NBA President in 2026. I appreciate the support of friends, associates, and colleagues. I will continue to serve the NBA whenever called upon. My ambition to serve as president remains, looking ahead to 2032 when the office is reserved for Midwest candidates,” he declared.
He concluded by pledging loyalty to the Forum and the NBA, affirming: “God bless the Midwest Bar Forum! God bless the NBA. Let’s do it!”
