*As Police Investigate Cause Of His Death

The Council of Legal Education has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mr. Victor Chibueze Olumba, a Bar Part II student of the Dr. Nabo Graham-Douglas Campus of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a joint statement dated June 4, 2025, and signed by Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, OFR, Chairman of the Council of Legal Education, and Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, the Council described the incident as “unfortunate” and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

“The Council of Legal Education is deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of Mr Victor Chibueze Olumba… Our thoughts and prayers are with the parents and other family members of the deceased student at this difficult time,” the statement read.

According to the Council, the management of the Nigerian Law School has been in contact with the family and had earlier conveyed its condolences following the tragic loss.

The statement confirmed that the cause of Olumba’s death is currently under full investigation by the Nigerian Police Force, Rivers State Command. The Council stressed that it would refrain from commenting on the specifics of the incident until the investigation is concluded.

“In the meantime, we urge the public to disregard unsubstantiated, reckless, and sensational speculations being circulated by some social media bloggers. Let us honour the memory of the deceased and respect the privacy of his family during this difficult period,” the statement emphasized.

The Council further assured students, parents, and the general public that the welfare and security of students across all seven campuses of the Nigerian Law School remain a top priority.

A comprehensive report on the incident will be released once the police investigation is complete.

The statement concluded with a solemn tribute: “May the soul of Mr Victor Chibueze Olumba rest in peace.”

While many have called for the police investigation to be made public in due time, they also urge that it should not become another endless Nigerian investigation.
