The Unconstitutional Rivers State Government, under the leadership of its Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), has suspended all political office holders and appointees across the state with immediate effect.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief of Staff to the Sole Administrator stated that the decision was taken in line with the powers allegedly conferred on him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The sweeping suspension affects key government officials, including:

  • The Secretary to the State Government (SSG)
  • The Chief of Staff
  • All Honourable Commissioners
  • Chairmen and members of boards, councils of agencies, commissions, institutions, and parastatals
  • All Special Advisers, Special Assistants, and Senior Special Assistants

The directive mandates that all suspended officials must immediately hand over to the Permanent Secretaries in their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). In cases where no Permanent Secretary is in place, the most senior Director or Head of Administration will assume leadership.

The suspension order takes effect from Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

The appointment of a Sole Administrator in a democratic setting has raised concerns over the legality of such governance structures, with legal experts questioning whether a state can be run without elected officials.
