The UK’s Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) has suspended a Nigerian doctor, Adekunle Owolabi, from medical practice for having a sexual relationship with a patient.

According to findings from a tribunal hearing, Dr. Owolabi, who qualified as a doctor in Nigeria in 2007 before moving to the UK in 2016, engaged in the misconduct with a depressed and vulnerable female patient he was treating.

The patient, referred to as ‘Patient A’, had consulted Dr. Owolabi between December 2020 and June 2021 for mental health issues including depression, anxiety, and insomnia. During this period, Dr. Owolabi made sexual advances towards Patient A on two occasions in March 2021, both of which she declined.

However, in April 2021, the married doctor and Patient A began having regular sexual relations, sometimes even during medical consultations in Dr. Owolabi’s home office. The sexual activity continued until June 2021 when the patient developed feelings for the doctor and wanted to deepen the relationship. At this point, Dr. Owolabi broke things off.

The tribunal found Dr. Owolabi guilty of abusing his professional position and violating professional boundaries with the vulnerable patient. His actions were deemed “fundamentally incompatible” with being a doctor.

As punishment, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal has suspended Dr. Owolabi from practicing medicine for a period of 12 months due to his “unacceptable” misconduct. The Nigerian doctor admitted to the sexual relationship during the hearing and apologized while also highlighting mental health struggles of his own.

The tribunal however maintained that Dr. Owolabi had taken advantage of the patient’s vulnerability in engaging in the sexual activity, amounting to an abuse of his position as her psychiatrist. The misconduct was aggravated by instances of sexual activity during medical consultations.
