The United States government has suspended the issuance of work visas for Nigerian and other foreign truck drivers, citing risks to American citizens’ safety and job security, officials announced on Thursday.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measure takes immediate effect, noting that the growing presence of foreign truck drivers on U.S. highways threatens lives and reduces opportunities for domestic truckers.
“Effective immediately, we are pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers,” Rubio said. “The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers.”
The decision is part of President Donald Trump’s renewed clampdown on immigration since his return to office in January 2025.
Under new measures, travelers from countries with high visa overstay rates or weak travel databases will be required to pay a bond of $5,000 to $15,000 before obtaining certain visa categories.
The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria also directed visa applicants to provide their social media handles from the past five years, warning that failure to comply could result in visa denial and potential ineligibility for future applications.
