Tension gripped residents of the Agulu and Nanka communities in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday morning after two persons were reportedly gunned down by suspected assailants.

The fatal attack occurred around 10:45 a.m. along the Agulu-Nanka boundary, sparking panic and unrest between the neighbouring communities. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen arrived on a motorcycle, carried out the killings, and fled the scene before security operatives could respond.

According to reports, one of the victims was shot while seated inside a red saloon car, while the second was killed while attempting to escape. The identities of the victims have yet to be officially released, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

A resident who spoke to newsmen under condition of anonymity alleged that the victims may have been members of local security outfits reportedly established by Governor Chukwuma Soludo during the recent elections. However, this claim has not been independently verified.

When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, did not respond to phone calls. However, a senior police officer confirmed the incident and disclosed that the newly appointed Commissioner of Police—a trained combatant—has deployed tactical teams to pursue the attackers.

“We don’t have full details yet, but the command will issue a statement soon. The situation is under control and we are on the trail of the assailants,” the officer said.
