President Donald Trump on Wednesday attended the dignified transfer of the remains of four United States service members killed in Iranian attacks this month, following renewed hostilities after the collapse of a ceasefire.

The four service members flown from the Middle East to Dover Air Force Base were identified as 28-year-old Angel S. Rampersad of New York, 30-year-old Michael Emmanuel Swinton of North Carolina, 25-year-old Tyler James Feehan of Hawaii, and 19-year-old Isabella Gonzales of Texas.
Dignified transfers are among the most solemn duties of a president, as commanders in chief often attend to pay respects to troops killed during conflicts under their watch. Trump had attended two previous dignified transfers since the war began in February, but Wednesday’s ceremony was his first since he declared on July 8 that the ceasefire was over.
The event underscored the growing human cost of the conflict, which has drawn criticism from lawmakers in both parties over the administration’s strategy. The war, which was briefly paused after both sides agreed to a peace plan that later collapsed, has thrown the region into renewed instability, leaving at least 18 Americans dead, costing at least $37.5 billion, and contributing to rising oil prices.
Trump and his administration have defended their handling of the conflict, insisting that the war is necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Speaking to reporters before departing for Dover, Trump said the visit was to honour the fallen service members.
“We’re going to Dover. Some of you are going with us. To honor our heroes, and they are indeed great heroes, actually,” Trump said.
“They said, and all of them said very strongly, we can’t let, we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. They won’t have a nuclear weapon. So we’re going to honor them. And it’s one of the hardest things to do, for me, it’s one of the hardest things to do as a president, but has to be done,” he added.
Family members of the fallen service members attended the ceremony, where the bodies of their loved ones were moved in American flag-draped transfer cases from a military aircraft into waiting vehicles.
Uniformed service members carried the transfer cases past Trump and senior officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Also present were Sen. Thom Tillis, Republican of North Carolina, and Sen. Chris Coons, Democrat of Delaware.
Trump and other officials saluted as the remains passed before them, while some attendees placed their hands over their hearts. The White House confirmed that the president also met privately with the families of the deceased.
According to the Pentagon, Gonzales was killed on Friday, while Feehan was killed on Saturday. Swinton was killed on Sunday during a controlled detonation of an attack drone.
The Pentagon said Rampersad was believed to have been killed in Jordan, adding that the incident remained under investigation. Officials also said she was believed to be the missing soldier who had been presumed dead.
The dignified transfer came a day after Hegseth faced tough questions from senators over the cost and strategy of the war during a tense hearing on the Pentagon’s budget request.
In one heated exchange, Sen. Gary Peters, Democrat of Michigan, described the administration’s approach as “an utter and complete failure” and pressed Hegseth on the long-term plan to end the war.
“You have over a trillion dollars,” Peters said. “You’re asking for one and a half trillion dollars. It’s not a question of money. It’s a question of leadership and understanding what it takes to actually win.”
The administration, however, has maintained that its military campaign is aimed at stopping Iran’s nuclear ambitions and protecting American interests in the region.
