Charlie Kirk, CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, is in critical condition after being shot Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University, authorities confirmed. A suspect is in custody, police said.
Videos from the event show Kirk speaking into a microphone under a white tent emblazoned with slogans “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong” when a single gunshot rang out. Blood can be seen gushing from the left side of his neck as stunned spectators scream and flee the area. The footage was verified as being taken at the Sorensen Center courtyard on campus.
Turning Point USA public relations manager Aubrey Laitsch said, “We are confirming that he was shot and we are praying for Charlie.”
The debate-style event, hosted by Turning Point USA, had drawn controversy on campus. An online petition had called for university administrators to bar Kirk from appearing, but the university last week reaffirmed its commitment to First Amendment rights, free speech, and constructive dialogue.
Former Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz, who attended the event, described the incident to Fox News as a “close shot” and noted that while Kirk had security present, it was insufficient.
President Donald Trump and several Republican and Democratic officials condemned the shooting, offering prayers for Kirk. On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”
The shooting is the latest in a series of politically motivated attacks in the U.S., including the assassination of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband in June, a firebombing at a Colorado parade demanding Hamas release hostages, and a fire at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence in April.
Turning Point USA was founded in 2012 by Kirk and William Montgomery to promote conservative values on college campuses. Over the years, Kirk has become a high-profile figure in the conservative movement, regularly appearing on cable TV and aligning closely with President Trump and his family.
In response to the shooting, Utah Valley University closed its campus and canceled classes, urging all students and staff to “secure in place until police officers can escort you safely off campus.”
